Hey fans of Lego Power Miners, get ready to add some new sets to your collection. I have heard mixed feelings about the Power Miners theme. Some people hate the lime green color scheme and don’t like that there are so many “specialized” bricks that can’t really be used for other things. But it is an imaginative theme with some cool looking minifigs and lava monsters.
Here are some of the more recent Lego Power Miner sets. A few of these are already in stores and the rest are coming out this summer.
Lego Power Miners Set# 8188 – Fire Blaster – $9.99 – 67 pieces
This little guy has been around since Christmas time even though it’s considered as part of the next wave. It’s a nice small set and you can even find it on sale at some stores now. It comes with a power miner and a yellow lava monster called Combustix. Apparently Combustix gets frequent bouts of explosive gas. He should lay off the beans.
This vehicle is a water cannon but it doesn’t really shoot water. That would have been a really cool feature if it was a working water cannon. However, the vehicle does come with a working “flick powered” dynamite missile. The cockpit also opens up to put the power miner minifig inside.
Lego Power Miners Set# 8189 – Magma Mech – $19.99 – 183 pieces
This a a nice sized 7″ mech with a working scissor claw grab-arm. It kinda reminds me of something from the Exo-Force line. So if you miss Exo-Force consider picking this bad boy up. You get a power miner and the orange lava monster. His momma named him Firax and he likes spicy Doritos and synchronized lava swimming.
Lego Power Miners Set# 8190 – Claw Catcher – $34.99 – 259 pieces
The Claw Catcher isn’t just pretty – it has skills. The clamping claws in front can grab a rambunctious lava monster minifig and flip him up and back into the cage in the rear of the vehicle. Bonus: it has huge monster truck wheels.
The set comes with a power miner equipped with the new heat resistant armor and the red lava monster named Infernox. Poor Infernox isn’t a bad guy he just got tired of hearing that noisy Claw Catcher truck rumbling past his house to early in the morning. No wonder he’s grouchy!
Lego Power Miners Set# 8191 – Lavatraz – $49.99 – 381 pieces
Now here is the big one. Lavatraz (get it? like Alcatraz) is a prison for lava monsters. It’s a kind of interesting set for $50. You get two power miner minifigs with the special heat resistant armor, the little orange Firax lava monster and the giant Eruptorr lava monster. What’s with the two “r” in his name? Kind of pretentious big guy. According to the story from Lego, this prison is the only thing that can contain the big ol’ Eruptorrrrrrr lava monster. If you ask me he could melt right through those bars.
In fact it looks more like a wrestling cage match than a prison for huge lava monsters.
There are some nice features with this set. You get a 6-wheeled dozer and a working claw crane to drop Eruptorr’s fiery butt in the cage.
But the best part of this set is the soda dispenser! I guess it gets pretty hot that deep underground so makes sense that the power miners are stocked with the cool drinks. It ain’t easy being a power miner.
Alas, Lavatraz is destined for failure because it is equipped with a working exploding cage that opens up to release its prisoners. Eruptorr is not gonna be in a happy mood after being locked up and being taunted by power miners who drank cool drinks in front of him without sharing. Say your prayers power miners!
As far as my recommendations of which of these to buy I guess you really have to be a fan of the Power Miners line. If you are a fan I’m sure you can’t wait to get all of these. If you’re not, I’d still recommend picking up the small Fire Blaster set because you can probably find in for cheap and everyone needs at least one lava monster minifig!
