Lego is releasing a series of Lego board games this year. As you may have seen last year there were a number of game sets release such as the Castle chess set #852001 or Tic Tac Toe game #852136. The Tic Tac Toe games were especially nice if you just wanted to get them to add to your minifig collection. (The Chess set was really expensive so didn’t make much sense to buy that one just for the minifigs.)
But in my latest order from Lego they included the Lego Universe Poster I mentioned in my previous posting as well as this brochure ad featuring the newest Lego games. I have the pages scanned here. Let me walk you through it.
As you can see the ad is very nice design. As a graphic designer myself I enjoy finding an ad I really enjoy. The first page, front cover shows that the ad is cut out into the shape of the new Lego die. At least I think this is a new piece. Please let me know if they’ve ever used this before.
The Lego die itself looks nice although just looking at it makes me think that removing the exchangeable tile pieces from it will be a challenge. Tile pieces have a small indication at the base that you can usually get a fingernail under. But on the die it looks like the black edges will prevent that.
The second page of the ad shows the Lego game “Minotaurus.” The name sounds like a kind of dinosaur. When I first saw this and the art at the top depicting minifigs wearing Greek helmets I got really excited. For years AFOLs have been saying that an ancient Greece or Roman theme would be awesome. And seeing the art of Greek themed figures made me think that that time had come. Unfortunately my excitement quickly turned to disappointment as I saw what the actual figures looked like. The aren’t minifigs at all. Instead they are pawn-like things the size of a 1×1 brick with a minifig head. They didn’t even include actual helmets, it’s just painted on the head.
To be fair I see why they have to be 1×1 size because each stud is basically one game spot. As the player rolls the die they move that number of studs. Nevertheless, I think the little pawns lower the value of the game because it alienates the Lego fans who bought previous games just to get the minifigs.
Plus look at the minotaur. It looks like a traffic light with horns. You’d think that a game based on a fearsome Minotaur would actually contain an inspiring Minotaur figure. I’m sure just leaving it made of existing blocks what way way cheaper that creating a sculpted minotaur figure. Again nothing to add to the value of the game though. The target audience for most of the games is 7+ they say. So I guess they assume the kids won’t care.
The next page has two games that are more interesting. A Pirate themed game called “Pirate Code” and a Creator game called “Creationary.” The Pirate game looks okay. I’m glad they included an actual minifig in this one . The game play seams kind of like mastermind where you try to figure out a series of colored gems.
The Creationary game looks awesome though. I love the idea of a Pictionary- or Cranium-style game using Lego. It actually reminds me of a creativity exercise used my corporations where they have the employees take a series of Lego Brick and try to come up with as many things they can. This is a really good test of the imagination. I don’t know how engaging the actual game would be for adults but I definitely like the idea.
The forth page has two smaller sized games. These are cute but look what we have…more pawn figures. There is “Lava Dragon” a race to the top game and “Monster 4.” Not much to say about the dragon game except Lava Dragon is a kewl name. But makes me think that the dragon should be made of lava. I like the Monster 4 game’s concept. Interesting that Lego did a game about the dead rising from the grave. I’m a sucker for monster themed things so this one looks cute. It looks like a simplified Chinese checkers or something. Players move across the board and get their pawns in a row. I’m not sure what roll the spider plays in the game but I like the look of him way better than the minotaur from the first game.
Here are the last too pages, basically just more information about the new line of games and a picture of some white boys (guess they aren’t too worried about reaching girls or minorities with these games) who are totally overjoyed because they are playing MINOTAURUS! hehe.
