Fans of Lego Castle have really been abuzz over the hope of sets featuring elves. Many bloggers have been talking about it too and the topic even came up on the Lego podcast called LAMLradio a few years back. Still no sign of the elves yet. So what happened? The consensus seems to be that Lego is cutting back on the Castle theme and may not be adding new sub-themes like elves. Part of this I feel had to do with the global recession. Lego like many companies had to really thin down it’s inventories and didn’t retool a lot in order to save on costs.
The buzz started because of a map included in a castle set that showed a region of the mythical kingdom that was ruled by elves. As you can see they show a drawing of an elf minifig! Very kewl looking, but because this elf is wearing a helmet one wonders how they would make the ears point out. Would the ears be part of the hair element? Would their heads be the classic yellow or skin toned “fleshy” colored? The minifigs are definitely the best part about dreaming of an elf sub theme.
There has also been this image floating around the blogosphere featuring a Lego elves set collection. This is fake of course, but I have to say they did a pretty nice job with it. It’s fun to see what a collection of sets featuring elves might look like in box. I don’t know who did it or I’d give them credit here. (Let me know in the comments if you guys know who did it).
The sets themselves would probably be a revamp of the old forestmen sets. These were kind of Robin Hood like models of tree-dweller hideouts and such. Since the elves are described as living in a mystical wood then this would be an obvious direction to take. Here are some pics of the old Forestmen theme. I like the last one here, The Forestme’s River Fortress 6077. I think it would be a great set to be applied to the Lego elf theme. But the ultimate would be something inspired by Rivendell or Lothlorien seen in the Lord of the Rings movies.

The bridges and walkways would look awesome. I’m sure Lego Castle fans would just love it to have some new window elements, like the gothic pointed ones in these Rivendell buildings. Oh well, who knows if Lego will come out with elves or not. Until then we can alway make our own MOCs of them.
